Summary

Hallie Piper is turning over a new leaf。 After belly-crawling out of a hotel room (hello, rock bottom), she decides it’s time to become a full-on adult。

She gets a new apartment, a new haircut, and a new wardrobe, but when she logs into the dating app that she has determined will find her new love, she sees none other than Jack, the guy whose room she’d snuck out of。

Through the app, and after the joint agreement that they are absolutely not interested in each other, Jack and Hallie become partners in their respective searches for The One。 They text each other about their dates, often scheduling them at the same restaurant so that if things don’t go well, the two of them can get tacos afterward。

Spoiler: they get a lot of tacos together。

Discouraged by the lack of prospects, Jack and Hallie make a wager to see who can find true love first, but when they agree to be fake dates for a weekend wedding, all bets are off。

As they pretend to be a couple, lines become blurred and they each struggle to remember why the other was a bad idea to begin with。

📖 I’m so torn on how to rate this! I’m gonna say this is a 3。5 ⭐️ book for me。 There were parts I loved so much & then there were so many parts that I was just meh。 This book was funny & clever but also like the author didn’t really have any good plot points so just tossed in as many as possible:-one night stand-best friends to lovers-fake it for the family/ex romance -one bed It was too much。 It just reads like the author had no other creative thought, nowhere else to go with the story but to s 📖 I’m so torn on how to rate this! She knows Jack better than anyone & visa versa。 But then she comes up with this story that she is just low hanging fruit & he only likes her & their weekend was so great because it was convenient to him — like what kind of kind tricks?! Worst of all, this thought of hers is never addressed! She has this thought, believes it,convinces herself he doesn’t really love her but the connivence of her。 And。 It’s。 Never。 Addressed。 She never confessed this a fear of hers so he can reassure her。And then they spend 2 weeks not talking to each other & he’s made to be the bad guy cause why didn’t he text or call?? Oh I’m sorry, does that only work one way?? Go back up a paragraph & read that last sentence about how she’s supposed to be a gutsy, feminist, speaks her mind kinda gal。And then they go to meet up at a bar。 She’s actually on a ‘date’ which Alex who she doesn’t like or even wants to be friends with but yet still goes to dinner with him so that Hallie can run out after him in the pouring rain to finally confront him。 Some scenes just did not make sense to get to a scene that the author just clearly wanted to have。But I did like the story because it was funny。 The first quarter of the way through I was obsessed。 But then things just stopped making sense - like Hallie is going to me out of the apartment with her roommate。And instead of ever telling her she just straight up moves all her shit out with the excuse: all the stuff in the living area is ruthie’s so she won’t even miss me。And the character Ruthie is just a whole other annoyed thing。 Because Hallie is supposed to like her but then by 114 she’s begging Jack to go with her to adopt a cat because she just cannot with her craziness。 And then she started talking about her smell: patchouli, onions & vanilla & how Ruthie showers 3x a day so it’s not BO。Hallie is a mean girl-out of nowhere Jack starts calling her Piper? Not sure we were ever introduced to her last name。 So seems a lil odd he just knows it。 。。。more

A lovely cutesy read。 I loved all the characters so much and Lynn painter could run me over with a car and I would thank her。 Took off a star for the third act kind-of break up but other than that I found myself laughing out loud multiple times and I loveeeddddd Hallie and Jack。

The GUY, Jack! But she DOES NOT want to date him and vice versa so they agree to be each other's wingperson and help find their other half。This turns into a wager to see who can find love first and they become best friends that go eat A LOT of tacos after their failed dates。 But they sort of, prefer each other's company more than any of their dates。 Now they're firmly stuck in the friendzone, but Hallie told her family that she has a boyfriend that she is taking for her sister's wedding so Jack agrees to be her fake boyfriend for the weekend。 What? It's not like one weekend of fun (and sex) going to ruin their friendship while both are hoping for more。。。 right? Yes, One bed folks! AND THEN there's a scene in the rain during the climax and it is SO Mr。 Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet!I literally laughed out loud reading this book and I absolutely adored it! The only thing I wish was explored more is Jack's job after the revelation at her sister's wedding and what happened to his PhD candidate date!Hoping for bonus scenes soon!! 。。。more

I feel not many people mention friends-to-lovers as their favorites, but I love the instant comfort that your able to have in a relationship if your were good friends (best friends in this case) as you transition to something more。 This was such an enjoyable and fast read for me。 I also feel it’s an amazing book for someone in a reading slump because most of it (besides some fast paced conflict) is just the two main characters being together both as best friends and lovers。 5 out of 5 stars favorite book for this month <333 。。。more

4。5-Read this entire book on a Friday night! I love Lynn’s banter between characters, and while it is technically a sequel, I appreciated that she didn’t do that thing where the previous characters are way too overemphasized。 I thought this one was fun and well done!

“If you’re there,” he said, sweetly brushing a tendril of hair behind her ear, “I’m there。” I'm not sure what was it about this book that made me swoon so hard。 Maybe it's my singleness rubbing me in my own face, maybe it was me reading it when I was at peak stress period but there was something in this book that made me feel good。 NOT SPOILER FREE I thought it was going to be another mediocre contemp where guy meets girl, girl falls first etc but this started off with a drunken ON “If you’re there,” he said, sweetly brushing a tendril of hair behind her ear, “I’m there。” I'm not sure what was it about this book that made me swoon so hard。 Maybe it's my singleness rubbing me in my own face, maybe it was me reading it when I was at peak stress period but there was something in this book that made me feel good。 NOT SPOILER FREE I thought it was going to be another mediocre contemp where guy meets girl, girl falls first etc but this started off with a drunken ONS that led onto them meeting each other again on a dating app (is there hope for ONS where I live to become a love story too?)。 They then form a friendship based on bets and running away from blind dates to get tacos together。 Guy, Jack falls first and sabotaged a guy off the app that Hallie was serious with so that he'd have the opportunity to pretend to be her fake boyfriend at a family event。 And then they have hot sex against the freezer with Hallie's mum locked out of the kitchen door and the happily ever after comes, making me feel lonely as heck。 What I liked about their dynamics was that Jack and Hallie bickered all the time like Tom and Jerry but there was this unspoken line of respect for one another。 It never reached a point where they were crying because of one another, sometimes when you're too alike or too close boundaries tend to be blurred but it was not for them。 They made a connection seem like it was easy to maintain and that's what every relationship needs to be like。 Hallie was not the typical, blushes at everything girl and I liked that she gave the badass energy to Jack。 I did not like Jack sabotaging the other connection Hallie had because that was the time for him to had come right out with his feelings。 But him doing that is what led him to be her fake boyfriend so it worked out for him in the end。 Overall this was a fun and fast read, better than the first book! As a stand-alone book, I loved this。 I loved Painter’s light writing style and the banter between characters。 The buildup and the level of spice was just right。 The thing I can’t get past is that I have also just read another of her novels and I swear it is the same book, same characters- just different names and a different plot。 I would love to read something a little different from her because I devoured this book, it just ended up feeling a bit too familiar and redundant at times。
